The History of Yarra Burn
Yarra Burn was born to a wine-loving husband and wife team in 1975 and remains one of the longest-running wine brands in the Yarra Valley. After eight years of nurturing, Yarra Burn experienced a key milestone; it became Yarra Valley’s first winery to craft a sparkling wine. And we haven’t looked back!
Sourced from its own idyllic Upper Yarra Valley vineyards Yarra Burn started making premium still wines including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Semillion and Sauvignon blanc. But the lure of making bubbles could not be resisted and pre-empting a wave of Yarra Valley based sparkling houses Yarra Burn made its first sparkling wine in 1983. Since then the focus for Yarra Burn has been on sparkling wines and the house has enjoyed accolades that include 32 wine show trophies and over 1000 medals.
In 2009, second-generation Winemaker, Nic Bowen, joined the Yarra Burn team. Starting off as an Assistant Sparkling Winemaker, Nic eagerly developed his skills across all methods of sparkling wine production. After years of absorbing winery mastery, he took over as Head Winemaker in the year 2013.
These days, Yarra Burn is known as a sparkling wine specialist, produces wines that amplify the purity of their cool-climate fruit sources while layering subtle complexity that is inviting for any occasion.
Meet the Winemaker - Ella Hoban
Ella grew up in the South Australian coastal town of Victor Harbour and was drawn to the wine industry as a young girl, recalling drives through McLaren Vale on trips to Adelaide, with the window down so she could enjoy the aroma of the grapes! Ella graduated from Viticulture and Oenology, Adelaide University in 2014 with an outstanding academic record and immediately began pursuing her craft around the world. International winemaking roles in California and Spain and then back home in Australia, with roles in Langhorne Creek and more recently the Adelaide Hills, have allowed Ella to develop and fine-tune her approach to winemaking. During this time she developed a deep passion and appreciation of crafting cool-climate sparkling wine, leading her to join the Yarra Burn, winemaking team. Ella now lives in the Adelaide Hills and is an active member of the wine community through her contributions to the Adelaide Hills Wine Show Committee and participation in various tasting groups.
